The Day I Became a Nurse

My father was sitting in his chair at the care home when I arrived and smiled at me. I sat down beside him, and he began talking about my mother. I knew she had been the most beautiful person in the world, always smiling and lighting up every room. I also knew she had been diagnosed with cancer although I don’t remember much else about her. He paused and told me that he also had cancer.

When I got home, I fell asleep on the sofa. Later, I woke up in my bed.

I called my dad and he told me that he had slept well and enjoyed talking about my mum the day before, and that for now there was no reason to worry about his health. I realized it had all been a terrible dream, yet I couldn’t simply return to my ordinary life. My FUTURE suddenly felt clearer: I wanted to study nursing to help others, since I couldn’t help her.
