Voices Against Hate
"Don’t debate such miscreants. Sharing the same space with fascists equals legitimising their ideology," my friend chided me. "And it puts at risk the future of the nation."
"Impeding the adversary from sharing his view would also be fascist," I replied. "I must prove that I'm better than them."
A brief but tense silence followed.
"You oughtn’t be eager to go here," he insisted. "Your reputation doesn't benefit from being in a place packed with intolerants."
"That’s the point. I don’t want to go there because it’s packed with intolerants. I must go there because it’s packed with intolerants. I must stand up to them to make the world see how wrong they are."
He sighed.
"But giving them voice brings them the opportunity to propagate hate speech!" he answered, his voice raised. "What if they succeed in corrupting people’s minds?"
"If that were the case," I answered, "society would evince its ignorance, and with it would lie the responsibility for any harm such a decision may bring."
